Domestic spiral staircases come under 2 aspects of the Building reg's.
• BS 5395 Part 2 1984.
This states that a spiral serving 1 habitable room should have a 600mm clear width, max rise of 220mm and centre going of more than 145mm. This would be our 1448mm and above diameter. For a main stair serving 2 or more habitable rooms (or a kitchen/lounge area) you require a 800mm clear width (900mm in Scotland), max rise of 220mm and a centre going of 190mm. This would be our 1830mm diameter (2083mm diameter in Scotland).
• Approved Document K.
This states that there is no minimum width requirement but should be built in accordance with BS 5395. I situations where space is limited, the diameter is at the discretion of the building inspector. It is this clause that allows flexibility with the diameter but we always suggest the client proceeds only with building controls agreement.
All spiral staircases will require a landing of some sort. Below are examples of the options for quoting purposes but bespoke landings can also be made if required. This is only to ensure that we give a true indication of the costs in a quote and if you progreesed your enquiries with us we would help work out the best landing option for you.

Landing By Others - Clients built their own landing as part of the floor. We will supply a bracket free of charge to make the connection from the metal centre column to the joists.

60 Degree – Triangular shaped landing either cut to flat or radius edge (for circular opening). The landing plate will match the style of the staircase.

90 Degree – Square shaped landing. The landing plate will match the style of the stairscase.
Powder coating is the coloured finish that can be applied to the metal elements of the stairs. What powder coating offers over and above a standard wet paint is a perfect finish with no drips or marks and the strength of the coating (paint) creates a greater durability/resistent to scratches, cracking, peeling, UV rays and rust.
All these balusters are cast in our own foundry in Stoke on Trent using British standard ingots created from recycled aluminium scrap. We have a full pattern making facility and have regularly been commissioned to make bespoke balusters.
